Putin’s China Visit Following Trump’s Departure Signals Beijing’s Continued Strategic Priority on Moscow

Moscow/Beijing — Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled to visit China next week, according to reports released just days after the widely watched summit talks between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump in Beijing.

Putin’s upcoming trip is being viewed as an effort to further strengthen the strategic partnership between Moscow and Beijing. Amid rapidly shifting global political dynamics, the timing of the visit is being regarded as particularly significant.

According to the South China Morning Post, Russian and Chinese officials are expected to discuss bilateral trade, energy cooperation, regional security and the ongoing Ukraine conflict during the visit. Since the outbreak of the Ukraine war and the subsequent imposition of sweeping Western sanctions on Russia, Moscow has continued expanding its economic and diplomatic ties with Beijing.

China has consistently maintained that it remains neutral regarding the Ukraine conflict. Although Western countries have accused Beijing of providing economic and diplomatic support to Russia, Chinese authorities have repeatedly rejected those allegations as unfounded.

According to the Kremlin, Putin will meet senior Chinese officials during the visit and participate in several bilateral engagements. International political observers say the timing of Putin’s China visit, coming immediately after Trump’s trip to Beijing, signals that although Beijing is increasing dialogue with Washington, it continues to place strategic priority on its relationship with Moscow.
