The Politics of Rumours and the Unshakable Foundation of Nepal-China Relations

Editorial:

The friendship between China and Nepal stands as tall as the Himalayas and as steadfast as Mount Everest. This relationship has been built upon centuries of mutual respect, trust, and cooperation. However, a rumour recently circulated on social media has made a malicious attempt to tarnish this sacred bond. Dragon Media extends its full support to the clear and firm remarks made by the Chinese Embassy in Nepal on this matter.

What was the rumour? Misleading information was spread on social media alleging that a Chinese national had attempted to bribe Nepali journalists to produce negative coverage against a certain politician. This accusation is not only baseless but also runs contrary to the core spirit of China’s foreign policy. China has always placed the principle of non-interference at the heart of its diplomacy. China’s commitment to non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries is well known to the international community.

As stated by the Chinese Embassy, this rumour is a carefully orchestrated conspiracy to deliberately denigrate China. The question arises: why and for whom was such a rumour spread? Could this be a move by some third party seeking to weaken Nepal-China relations? Nepali authorities must conduct a serious investigation to find answers to these questions. The demand for an investigation raised by the Embassy and the call for action against the guilty are entirely justified.

This is not merely a matter of a rumour; it is also a test that seeks to weaken the foundation of trust between Nepal and China. Nepal has always appreciated the consistent support provided by China in safeguarding its sovereignty and independence. The role played by China in political stability, economic development, and the improvement of people’s livelihoods has been felt by every citizen of Nepal. In such a context, a mere rumour cannot affect the cordial relations between the two countries.

China’s contribution to Nepal’s development cannot be denied. From BRI projects to the solidarity demonstrated by China in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, these are shining examples. China has always expressed respect for Nepal’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. Therefore, no rumour can alter this reality.

Dragon Media believes that Nepal’s intellectuals, journalists, and the general public will be able to distinguish truth from falsehood. We wholeheartedly support the Chinese Embassy’s appeal to “let reason and wisdom put an end to rumours.” Both sides must join hands to advance the traditional friendship and cooperation between Nepal and China.

Whatever the intentions of those spreading rumours, the foundation of Nepal-China relations is not so weak as to be shaken by a false accusation. We hope that the Nepali side will conduct an objective investigation into this matter, bring the guilty to justice, and further strengthen the trust between the two countries. China will always remain Nepal’s trusted friend and development partner.
