Russia and Algeria Agree to Strengthen Cooperation on Biological Security

Algeria. Russia and Algeria held consultations on biological security on June 4, 2026, in Algeria. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the meeting focused on regional and global biological security challenges, bilateral cooperation, and efforts to strengthen the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention, known as the BTWC.
The Russian delegation was headed by Konstantin Vorontsov, Deputy Director of the Department for Non-Proliferation and Arms Control at the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Algerian delegation was led by Nazim Khaldi, Director of Political Affairs at the General Directorate of Multilateral Relations of Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During the meeting, both sides exchanged assessments of biological security threats in Africa and around the world. They also discussed ways to develop bilateral cooperation in this field and reinforce the BTWC regime.
The consultations confirmed that Russia and Algeria share similar approaches on biological security issues. Both sides emphasized the need for continued close coordination and constructive engagement, both bilaterally and through relevant multilateral platforms, especially within the framework of the BTWC and the United Nations.
The meeting is viewed as an effort to further institutionalize Russia–Algeria dialogue on sensitive biological security matters. At a time of evolving regional and global security challenges, such consultations are expected to contribute to stronger cooperation, transparency, and risk management in the field of biological security.
