Russia and South Africa Reaffirm Commitment to Strengthen Historic Ties

Russian Ambassador to South Africa Roman Ambarov held a high-level meeting with African National Congress First Deputy Secretary-General Nomvula Mokonyane on June 9, following the ANC’s recent working visit to Moscow.

The meeting reaffirmed the longstanding historic friendship between Russia and South Africa and highlighted their shared commitment to deepening political dialogue, promoting peace and development, and supporting the building of a more just multipolar world order.

According to the Russian Embassy, the meeting once again underscored the long-term relationship between the two countries. Both sides emphasized the need to further strengthen mutual understanding, cooperation and coordination on international issues of common interest.

Reflecting on the discussions, Ambassador Ambarov said Russia highly values its bilateral relations with South Africa as well as its historic ties with the ANC. He noted that continued dialogue is helping strengthen cooperation, mutual understanding and solidarity on key international matters.

The meeting is being viewed as another indication of the growing geopolitical and strategic alignment between Russia and South Africa. Both countries have expressed their intention to expand cooperation on international platforms and promote a world order based on multipolarity, development and equality.

Relations between Russia and South Africa have historically been linked to political, diplomatic and ideological cooperation. The latest meeting reaffirmed the commitment to make those ties more active and effective in the current international context.
