Fish Spawning Migration Begins in Qinghai Lake Area

Kathmandu — The annual fish spawning migration has begun in the northern area of Qinghai Lake in China. According to local reports, the season for golden fish to return upstream started on June 9 in the Lhachab Khuk scenic area of Qinghai Lake.

The Lhachab Khuk scenic area is located in Gangca County of Haibei Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province. Every year, from late May to early August, golden fish found in Qinghai Lake move in large groups toward rivers and streams that flow into the lake.

These fish migrate upstream for spawning. Compared with the lake, the clean and less saline water in the upper reaches of the rivers is considered more suitable for laying eggs. For this reason, the natural process of fish moving from the lake toward rivers begins around this time every year.

According to local sources, the Omchu River, Tsohyil River, Beuha River, and Tanakma River around Qinghai Lake are regarded as the main spawning waters for the fish. These rivers are among the major tributaries flowing into Qinghai Lake, where large numbers of fish gather during the breeding season.

This annual fish migration is considered highly important for the ecological system of Qinghai Lake. The movement of fish from the lake to the rivers for spawning keeps the biological connection between the lake and its tributaries alive. It contributes not only to the reproduction of fish populations but also to maintaining the aquatic ecological balance around the lake.

Qinghai Lake is one of China’s major highland lakes. Because of its unique geographical and climatic conditions, its ecosystem is considered sensitive. Experts say the life cycle, breeding process, and lake-river migration of fish species found in the lake also serve as indicators of the environmental health of the area.

After the spawning season begins, the natural scenery of the area becomes especially attractive. Tourists, nature lovers, and researchers often visit the Lhachab Khuk area to observe groups of fish moving upstream. The collective journey of fish against the flow of water is regarded as a rare scene in the natural cycle.

Local authorities are expected to pay special attention to fish protection, water-area conservation, and the management of tourism activities during the breeding season. Obstacles to fish movement, excessive human activity, water pollution, or illegal fishing during the egg-laying period could negatively affect the spawning process, making conservation a priority.

The annual fish spawning migration in the Qinghai Lake area is considered an important natural event from the perspectives of biodiversity, water-resource protection, and ecological tourism. With the golden fish beginning their journey upstream this year, the northern area of Qinghai Lake has once again welcomed a special season in the cycle of natural life.
