Cape Verde Make Historic World Cup Debut by Holding Spain to Goalless Draw

Atlanta. Cape Verde produced one of the most memorable results in World Cup history after holding European champions Spain to a goalless draw in their debut match.
At the final whistle in Atlanta, Cape Verde players and supporters celebrated an extraordinary achievement against one of the tournament favourites. At the centre of the historic performance was 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha, who delivered a heroic display between the posts.
Vozinha, whose real name is Josimar Dias, was named Player of the Match after making a series of crucial saves to deny Spain. Overcome with emotion after the game, he said he remembered his grandparents, who raised him but were no longer alive to witness the moment.
He also said his mother could not arrive in time because of visa and financial difficulties. “We are not here just to enjoy the World Cup. We are here to fight and compete for our country,” he said, highlighting the unity of the team as Cape Verde’s greatest strength.
By making his World Cup debut at the age of 40 years and 12 days, Vozinha also set a new record as the oldest player to debut in a World Cup match. His journey to this stage has been remarkable, as he only began playing professional football at the age of 25.
Born in Cape Verde, a small island nation off the west coast of Africa, Vozinha faced limited football opportunities in his early years. Despite being considered one of the best goalkeepers on the islands, he was often overlooked because of his height. He later moved to Portugal in search of better opportunities and went on to play club football in several countries, including Slovakia, Angola, Moldova and Cyprus. He is currently associated with Portuguese second-division club Chaves.
Against Spain, Vozinha stood firm under constant pressure and made seven important saves. His performance, along with Cape Verde’s disciplined defending, drew widespread praise from football analysts and fans around the world.
The result also sparked huge excitement on social media, where Vozinha quickly became a trending figure. His Instagram following reportedly rose sharply within hours of the match.
With a population of around 550,000, Cape Verde is one of the smallest nations ever to qualify for the World Cup. By stopping Spain in their opening match, the island nation announced its arrival on football’s biggest stage in unforgettable fashion.
