Beijing Talks Seek to Give New Momentum to China–Myanmar Cooperation

Kathmandu. Chinese Premier Li Qiang met with Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing in Beijing on Tuesday, with both sides discussing political trust, development cooperation, security coordination and people-to-people exchanges.

Premier Li said China and Myanmar are good neighbors and friends. He stated that China supports Myanmar in following a development path suited to its national conditions and firmly supports the governance of the new Myanmar government.

Li said China is ready to work with Myanmar under the strategic guidance of the two heads of state. He called for carrying forward traditional friendship, consolidating political mutual trust, deepening mutually beneficial cooperation and promoting steady progress in bilateral relations. He said stronger ties would better serve the modernization efforts of both countries and jointly promote regional stability and prosperity.

The Chinese Premier said Beijing is willing to deepen high-quality cooperation with Myanmar under the Belt and Road Initiative. He identified renewable energy, artificial intelligence and the digital economy as areas where the two sides can expand cooperation. He said China and Myanmar should continue to move forward together on the path of common development.

Li also stressed the need to further strengthen law enforcement and security cooperation. He said the two countries should work together to eradicate cross-border crimes, including online gambling and telecom fraud, and effectively safeguard the safety of Chinese personnel, institutions and projects in Myanmar.

He added that China is willing to deepen exchanges and cooperation with Myanmar in education, culture, tourism, youth affairs and health. In the context of a complex international situation, Li called on both sides to coordinate closely within multilateral frameworks, safeguard the common interests of developing countries and promote the building of a more just and reasonable global governance system.

Min Aung Hlaing said Myanmar firmly adheres to the one-China principle and firmly opposes Taiwan independence. He expressed gratitude to China for providing valuable assistance to Myanmar’s economic and social development.

He said Myanmar is willing to enhance strategic alignment with China, promote cooperation on the Myanmar-China Economic Corridor and deepen cooperation in trade, investment and other fields. He also called for stronger people-to-people and cultural exchanges, saying Myanmar is ready to push the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership between the two countries to a higher level.

Min Aung Hlaing said Myanmar is willing to work closely with China to resolutely crack down on cross-border crimes. He added that Myanmar fully supports the four major global initiatives proposed by China and is ready to strengthen communication and collaboration with Beijing to promote regional peace, stability, development and prosperity.

The Beijing meeting is being presented as part of efforts to raise the China–Myanmar comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership to a higher level.
