Kazan Hosts Russia–ASEAN Summit to Open New Phase of Cooperation

Kathmandu. The Russia–ASEAN Summit opened in Kazan on June 17–18, 2026, marking the 35th anniversary of relations between Russia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

The summit, hosted with the participation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, is focused on reviewing the Russia–ASEAN strategic partnership and identifying new areas of cooperation in political, economic, cultural and humanitarian fields. The leaders are also expected to exchange views on current international and regional issues.

According to the Kremlin, several joint documents are expected to be adopted during the summit, including the Kazan Declaration and the Russia–ASEAN Comprehensive Plan of Action. Russian sources said the documents are intended to guide the future development of the strategic partnership between Russia and ASEAN.

The summit brings together delegations from ASEAN member states and partner countries. TASS reported that invitations were sent to 14 delegations, with more than 8,000 guests expected to attend events connected with the summit. Participants include leaders and senior representatives from Southeast Asian countries, as well as ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn.

On the sidelines of the summit, President Putin is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with heads of delegations from ASEAN member states. These meetings are expected to cover trade, investment, energy, transport, food security, information technology, regional cooperation and broader political dialogue.

Alongside the summit, Kazan is also hosting the Russia–ASEAN Business Forum on June 17. Entrepreneurs and business representatives from Russia and Southeast Asian countries are discussing prospects for trade and economic cooperation, including investment, artificial intelligence, transport and logistics connectivity, energy cooperation, digital technologies and interaction between the Eurasian Economic Union and ASEAN.

Russia and ASEAN established relations in 1991. Over the past 35 years, both sides have expanded dialogue in diplomacy, trade, security, education, culture and people-to-people exchanges. The Kazan summit is being presented by the Russian side as an opportunity to give new momentum to the partnership and define long-term priorities for cooperation.
