Jonathan David Hat-Trick Gives Canada Historic World Cup Win

Kathmandu — Jonathan David scored a brilliant hat-trick as co-host Canada recorded a historic first victory in the men’s FIFA World Cup, defeating Qatar 6–0 in a dominant Group B match on Thursday.

Playing in front of a passionate home crowd at BC Place in Vancouver, Canada controlled the game from the beginning and placed Qatar under constant pressure. The result gave Canada four points from two matches and significantly strengthened its chances of reaching the knockout stage.

David was the standout performer for Canada, completing a memorable hat-trick and leading one of the most important wins in Canadian football history. Cyle Larin and Nathan Saliba also scored, while Qatar conceded an own goal as Canada turned its attacking dominance into a heavy victory.

The win marked Canada’s first-ever victory in the men’s World Cup. After opening the tournament with a draw, Jesse Marsch’s side needed a strong result against Qatar, and the team responded with one of the most convincing performances of the group stage.

Qatar struggled throughout the match and finished with nine players after two red cards in the second half. The dismissals further weakened its defensive structure and allowed Canada to take full control of the contest.

However, Canada’s celebration was affected by a serious injury to midfielder Ismaël Koné. The incident created a tense atmosphere on the field, with players and staff from both sides involved in moments of concern and dispute. Koné’s condition will now be a major concern for Canada as the team prepares for its final group match.

For Canada, the result was more than a routine group-stage win. It was a symbolic moment for a co-host nation seeking to establish itself on the global football stage. The performance showed attacking confidence, tactical discipline and strong emotional energy in front of home supporters.

Qatar, meanwhile, suffered a major setback. The heavy defeat, combined with disciplinary problems and defensive weaknesses, has severely damaged its hopes of advancing from the group.

Canada will now face Switzerland in its final Group B match. Even if Canada loses, its strong goal difference gives it a favorable position in the race for the knockout round. However, the team will still need to manage Koné’s injury and maintain momentum after such an emotional victory.

David’s hat-trick and Canada’s six-goal performance will be remembered as a landmark night for Canadian football. But for Jesse Marsch’s side, the challenge now is to turn history into progress by securing a place in the next round.
