Mokoena Penalty Rescues South Africa in Draw With Czechia

Kathmandu — South Africa avoided defeat with a late penalty as they held Czechia to a 1–1 draw in an important FIFA World Cup Group A match.

Czechia made a strong start and took the lead in the sixth minute through Michal Sadilek. Adam Hlozek delivered the cross, Alexandr Sojka helped set up the chance, and Sadilek finished clinically to put Czechia 1–0 ahead.

Czechia had an opportunity to take control even earlier, but striker Patrik Schick missed a clear chance in the opening minute. After scoring first, Czechia tried to manage the game, but they failed to find a second goal that could have secured victory.

South Africa struggled for rhythm in the first half but improved after the break. They showed greater urgency in possession and pushed higher up the pitch, although clear chances remained limited for much of the game.

The turning point came seven minutes before the end when Czechia’s Pavel Sulc was penalized for handball inside the box. Teboho Mokoena stepped up and calmly converted the penalty, bringing South Africa level at 1–1.

Mokoena’s goal proved crucial for South Africa. After losing their opening match, another defeat would have left their hopes of reaching the knockout stage in serious danger. The draw keeps them alive, although they now face a must-win situation in their final group match.

For Czechia, the result was disappointing. They had taken an early lead and created opportunities, but their failure to close out the match cost them two important points. The late penalty left them with only one point from two matches.

South Africa coach Hugo Broos praised his players’ mentality after the match, saying the team made mistakes but showed courage and determination. He said South Africa still had a chance to progress if they could maintain the same spirit and defeat South Korea in their final group game.

Czechia coach Miroslav Koubek defended his players, saying they had given everything on the field despite failing to secure victory.

The result leaves both South Africa and Czechia with one point each from two matches. Co-host Mexico and South Korea remain ahead in Group A, increasing pressure on both teams ahead of the final round.

South Africa will next face South Korea, while Czechia will play Mexico. For both sides, the final group match will be decisive in their attempt to reach the knockout stage.

Overall, the draw kept both teams alive in the tournament but made their path more difficult. For South Africa, Mokoena’s penalty was a lifeline. For Czechia, losing an early lead may prove costly.
