Lavrov Meets Ecuadorian Candidate for UN Secretary-General Espinosa

Moscow — Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held a meeting on June 22 with Maria Fernanda Espinosa, Ecuador’s candidate for the post of United Nations Secretary-General.

During the meeting, Espinosa presented her election programme. She reportedly shared her views on the future leadership of the United Nations, institutional reform, and the UN’s role in global affairs.

Foreign Minister Lavrov outlined Russia’s expectations and criteria for candidates seeking the UN’s top post.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to the central coordinating role of the United Nations in world affairs. They also emphasized that the UN Charter should remain the fundamental framework and guiding principle of international relations.

In recent years, Russia has presented the UN Charter, sovereign equality of states, international law, and a multipolar world order as key foundations of its foreign policy.
