Senior Chinese Defence Science Official Under Investigation

Beijing — Bian Zhigang, deputy head of China’s State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defence, has been placed under disciplinary and supervisory investigation, according to an official statement released on Wednesday.

The statement said Bian is being investigated by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the Communist Party of China and the National Commission of Supervision on suspicion of serious violations of Party discipline and law.

Bian is also a member of the leading Party members’ group of the administration, a key government body responsible for overseeing China’s defence science, technology and industrial sectors.

The State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defence plays an important role in coordinating areas linked to defence technology and industry, including nuclear technology, aerospace, aviation, shipbuilding, weapons systems and electronics.

Bian has also been associated with China’s space-related administrative work. Public information from China’s National Space Administration has listed him among senior officials involved in civilian space research projects, major space program implementation, and international space exchanges and cooperation.

The official statement did not provide further details about the specific nature of the suspected violations, the current stage of the investigation, or any possible legal proceedings.

In China’s political and administrative system, the phrase “serious violations of discipline and law” is commonly used in official announcements involving Party disciplinary and state supervisory investigations into public officials.

The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection is the Communist Party of China’s top internal disciplinary body, while the National Commission of Supervision is the state supervisory authority responsible for overseeing public officials.

The investigation comes amid continued scrutiny of officials in sensitive sectors related to defence, technology and strategic industries. China’s defence science and technology sector is closely linked to national security, military modernization, space development and high-technology industrial policy.

However, the publicly available information so far remains limited to the announcement of the investigation. The allegations against Bian have not been proven. Further action, prosecution or administrative decisions will depend on the findings of the relevant Chinese authorities.
