Vegetable Farming Flourishes in Somang Township, Helping Farmers Earn Close to Home

Kathmandu — Farmers in Somang Township of Barkam City, under the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture in China’s Sichuan Province, are busy harvesting vegetables as local agriculture continues to gain momentum. By making good use of local soil, climate conditions and market opportunities, vegetable farming has begun to create jobs, increase income and strengthen rural self-reliance.

Recently, at the Yuhao mushroom cultivation base in Somang Township, local residents were seen picking, sorting and preparing pea shoots for the market. Farmers reached the fields early in the morning to collect fresh vegetables and prepare them for organized distribution.

In recent years, Somang Township has prioritized vegetable farming based on its local geographical and climatic advantages. Farmers have been encouraged to grow crops suited to local conditions, including pea shoots, garlic leaves and other green vegetables. The vegetable cultivation area has now expanded to more than 1,000 mu.

This initiative has created employment and income opportunities for farmers within their own villages. Many families that once relied mainly on traditional farming are now turning toward commercial vegetable production. With work available close to home, farmers no longer need to travel far for income opportunities, while women’s participation in the local economy has also increased.

Somang’s agricultural transformation is not limited to higher production. It has also strengthened confidence in rural life. By using local resources, labor and skills, farmers have shown that income generation is possible within the village itself. Earnings from vegetable farming have helped families cover household expenses, children’s education, healthcare and daily needs.

Local authorities have been encouraging farmers to choose crops according to weather conditions, soil quality and market demand. This has made agricultural production more practical and profitable. Crops such as pea shoots and garlic leaves have proven effective because they grow quickly, have steady market demand and provide regular cash income for farmers.

Production centers such as the Yuhao mushroom cultivation base have also supported the village’s agricultural development. Such facilities help connect farmers with organized production, sorting, collection and sales systems. As a result, even small farmers have gained better access to markets.

From the perspective of rural revitalization, Somang’s experience is seen as a positive example. Identifying local strengths, selecting suitable crops, encouraging farmers, connecting production with markets and creating jobs within the village have all helped make the initiative effective. The experience also shows that modern and commercial farming is possible in mountainous and highland rural areas.

The sight of farmers busy harvesting vegetables has become a symbol of Somang’s changing rural economy. The activity in the fields reflects the hard work, hope and growing prosperity of the village. For local farmers, this is not only a harvest season but also an opportunity to build a brighter future from their own land.

Somang Township’s vegetable farming initiative has shown a promising path for strengthening the rural economy, helping local people earn income close to home and promoting organized agricultural production. It stands as an example of how village development becomes possible when locally suitable agriculture, farmers’ hard work and institutional support come together.
