Lavrov and Briceño Exchange Greetings on 35th Anniversary of Russia Belize Diplomatic Relations

Kathmandu: Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Belizean Prime Minister and Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs John Briceño have exchanged congratulatory messages on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and Belize.

In messages exchanged on June 25, both sides expressed their commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, Russia and Belize have built a solid legal foundation for the comprehensive development of bilateral cooperation over the past years. In his message, Foreign Minister Lavrov emphasized the need to unlock the full potential of relations between the two countries.

Lavrov said cooperation at international forums and joint efforts to build a genuinely multipolar world are important dimensions of Russia Belize relations. According to the Russian side, the dialogue between the two countries is based on sovereign equality, mutual respect and the principles of international law.

Prime Minister and Acting Foreign Minister Briceño also reaffirmed Belize’s commitment to further strengthening Russian Belizean ties in areas of mutual interest. He noted that such cooperation would benefit not only the peoples of the two countries but also have a positive impact on the development of the wider Caribbean region.

Russia and Belize formally established diplomatic relations on June 25, 1991. Since then, the two countries have gradually expanded political dialogue, legal cooperation, multilateral diplomacy and people to people contacts.

Important agreements reached in 2017, 2018 and 2021 have further institutionalized bilateral relations. These include a protocol on consultations between the two foreign ministries, a treaty on basic relations and an agreement on mutual visa exemption for nationals of Russia and Belize.

For Russia, Belize is seen as an important partner for expanding dialogue and cooperation with the Caribbean region. For Belize, relations with Russia may open new opportunities in international forums, education, science, culture, tourism and economic cooperation.

The messages exchanged on the 35th anniversary reflect the desire of both countries to move Russia Belize relations beyond formal diplomatic contact toward more practical cooperation.

Relations between Russia and Belize also send a message that sustainable cooperation between large and small states is possible on the basis of sovereign equality, mutual respect and shared interests. If the commitments expressed by both sides are translated into practical action, this relationship could become more active in Caribbean regional cooperation and multilateral diplomacy in the years ahead.
