Nepal, Russia Pledge to Strengthen Ties Ahead of 70th Diplomatic Anniversary

KATHMANDU – Nepal’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Shisir Khanal, held a high-level bilateral meeting on June 30, 2026, with the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Nepal, Mr. Alexey Surovtsev. The discussions, which served as the ambassador’s official introductory visit, centered on enhancing bilateral cooperation as both nations prepare to mark the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations on July 20 .
During the meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the parties discussed the prospects for developing bilateral cooperation in the context of the landmark anniversary, including issues related to improving mechanisms for interaction. Ambassador Surovtsev’s appointment earlier this year is seen as an attempt to breathe new life into the relationship with Kathmandu .
While the talks explored a wide array of bilateral matters, Minister Khanal also raised the pressing humanitarian and security issue of Nepali citizens currently serving within the ranks of the Russian Army . The situation regarding Nepali nationals in the Russian military has been a point of significant domestic anxiety and diplomatic engagement for Kathmandu, which has repeatedly urged Moscow to halt recruitment, repatriate citizens, and provide compensation for the families of the deceased .
Beyond this concern, both sides expressed a commitment to continue working through diplomatic channels to address outstanding issues and further strengthen long-standing relations . The Embassy of the Russian Federation expressed gratitude to Minister Khanal for his attention to the proposals of the Russian side. In turn, the diplomatic mission will report to the Russian leadership on the issues raised by the Foreign Minister of Nepal .
The meeting underscored the shared intention to leverage the 70th anniversary as an opportunity to rejuvenate ties, with discussions covering trade, energy, education, and tourism, areas where both nations see significant potential for growth .
