Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, Guyana’s candidate for the position of United Nations Secretary-General, on July 3.

During the meeting, Rodrigues-Birkett presented her electoral programme and outlined her vision for the future leadership and role of the United Nations.

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, Lavrov explained Russia’s expectations and requirements for candidates seeking the UN’s highest administrative position.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to preserving the United Nations’ central coordinating role in international affairs.

Their discussions also highlighted the importance of multilateral diplomacy, respect for the principles of the UN Charter and cooperation among member states in addressing global challenges.

Rodrigues-Birkett, a former foreign minister of Guyana, has been nominated by her country as a candidate to succeed current UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

Under the UN Charter, the Secretary-General is appointed by the General Assembly upon the recommendation of the Security Council. As a permanent member of the Council, Russia plays an important role in the selection process.

The next UN Secretary-General is expected to assume office on January 1, 2027, following the completion of Guterres’ second term.
