Defending champions Argentina ended World Cup debutants Cape Verde’s remarkable campaign only after a fierce struggle, securing a dramatic 3–2 victory in extra time to reach the last 16.
Cape Verde twice came from behind and held Argentina to a 1–1 draw after 90 minutes, extending their fearless performance from the group stage into the knockout round.
Argentina took the lead in the 29th minute when Lionel Messi controlled a long pass from Lisandro Martinez before beating Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha with an excellent finish.
Cape Verde increased the pressure in the second half and drew level in the 59th minute. Deroy Duarte struck powerfully from outside the penalty area, sending the ball beyond Emiliano Martinez and into the net.
With no further goals in regulation time, the match moved into extra time.
Argentina regained the lead just two minutes into the additional period. Lisandro Martinez collected the ball near the edge of the penalty area following a corner and scored with a powerful strike to make it 2–1.
Cape Verde, however, refused to surrender. In the 103rd minute, Sidney Lopes Cabral produced a spectacular curling effort from the left side of the penalty area, beating the Argentine goalkeeper and restoring parity at 2–2.
Cabral’s outstanding finish was one of the most memorable goals of the tournament and placed the defending champions under intense pressure.
The decisive moment came in the 111th minute. Cristian Romero connected with Messi’s corner, and his header deflected off Cape Verde defender Diney Borges before crossing the line. The goal was recorded as an own goal and gave Argentina a 3–2 lead.
Cape Verde continued to search for another equaliser during the closing stages. Cabral and his teammates created dangerous opportunities, but goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez made important saves to prevent the match from reaching a penalty shootout.
Argentina secured the victory, but the defining story of the match was Cape Verde’s courage, organisation and self-belief. Competing in the World Cup for the first time, the team had already produced a sensational group-stage campaign before advancing to the knockout round.
With a population of around half a million, Cape Verde became the least populous country ever to reach the World Cup knockout stage. Against the defending champions, they recovered from two deficits, forced the contest into extra time and earned admiration from football supporters around the world.
The defeat brought Cape Verde’s historic campaign to an end, but their fearless football, disciplined performance and resilience in their first World Cup appearance will be remembered as one of the tournament’s most inspiring stories.
Argentina, meanwhile, kept their title defence alive and will face Egypt in the round of 16.
