Title favourites France advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Paraguay 1–0.

In a highly competitive round-of-16 match played at a stadium in Philadelphia, United States, captain Kylian Mbappe scored the only goal from the penalty spot to secure France’s place in the last eight.

The first half ended goalless, with France dominating possession and launching repeated attacks but struggling to break through Paraguay’s disciplined defence.

France were awarded a penalty in the 70th minute after Diego Gomez brought down Desire Doue inside the penalty area. Following a video assistant referee review, Mbappe calmly converted the spot kick to give his team a 1–0 lead.

It was Mbappe’s 19th World Cup goal and his seventh of the current tournament.

France had produced impressive attacking performances in their previous matches, but Paraguay offered a strong challenge through a physical, disciplined and defensively organised approach.

Paraguay prevented France’s attacking players from scoring for much of the match but were unable to recover after conceding from the penalty spot.

France controlled 76 percent of possession and attempted 15 shots at the opposition goal.

The French completed 552 passes, while Paraguay managed only 175. Paraguay attempted just five shots during the entire match.

Paraguayan goalkeeper Orlando Gill kept his side in contention by stopping dangerous second-half efforts from Mbappe and Manu Kone.

However, Paraguay’s attack was unable to apply decisive pressure on the French defence.

France have now won all five of their matches in the tournament, scoring 14 goals and conceding only two.

Having reached the World Cup quarterfinals for the fourth consecutive time, France will now face Morocco for a place in the semifinals.

Morocco secured their place in the last eight by defeating co-hosts Canada 3–0 in another round-of-16 match.

The France–Morocco quarterfinal will be a repeat of their semifinal meeting at the 2022 World Cup, when France defeated Morocco.
