Infrared Camera Captures More Than 10 Rare Wildlife Species, Including Giant Panda

A single infrared camera installed in the Huanglong Nature Reserve in China’s Sichuan Province has clearly captured the activities of more than 10 rare wildlife species, including the giant panda.

The images and videos recorded in the reserve, located in Songpan County under the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, indicate that wildlife protection, biodiversity and the natural ecosystem in the area are steadily improving.

Reserve staff discovered the footage while reviewing data collected through routine infrared camera monitoring. A single camera placed at one location recorded the activities of various rare species, including the giant panda, golden snub-nosed monkey, takin, blue sheep, Asian black bear, Chinese serow, tufted deer, blood pheasant, hog badger, leopard cat and red fox.

Many of these animals are listed as important nationally protected species in China. The fact that so many rare species were captured by one camera is being viewed as an important sign that the forest environment in the reserve is becoming healthier, safer and more suitable for wildlife.

The footage shows a giant panda moving quietly through the forest in search of food. It also captures golden snub-nosed monkeys jumping swiftly among tree branches. Other animals, including takins, blood pheasants, Asian black bears, leopard cats and red foxes, were seen appearing in the same forest area at different times.

According to reserve staff, infrared cameras operate continuously day and night, making it possible to observe the natural behaviour of wildlife without direct human interference. Such technology helps collect scientific data on wildlife movement, feeding habits, habitat use, coexistence among species and the overall state of biodiversity.

The reserve said the footage shows that the ecological chain in Huanglong is gradually becoming more complete and that biodiversity is becoming richer. The presence of different mammals, birds and other wildlife species in the same forest area reflects the positive results of conservation efforts.

The natural movement, feeding and coexistence of wildlife in the same area are considered important signs of a healthy ecosystem. They indicate that vegetation, water sources, the food chain and habitat quality in the reserve are favourable for wildlife.

Huanglong is one of the important ecological areas in western Sichuan. It is known for its mountain forests, high-altitude landscape, water resources, biodiversity and rare wildlife. The presence of species such as giant pandas and golden snub-nosed monkeys further highlights the ecological importance of the region.

The giant panda is widely recognized as a symbol of China’s biodiversity conservation. Similarly, the presence of golden snub-nosed monkeys, takins, blood pheasants and other rare wildlife species provides strong evidence of the reserve’s rich biological resources. In recent years, the reserve has prioritized wildlife monitoring, habitat protection, forest patrols, fire prevention, anti-poaching efforts and scientific data management. The infrared camera monitoring system has made these efforts more effective.

Infrared cameras are considered highly important tools for conservation research. They automatically capture images and videos in forests, mountain areas and sensitive wildlife habitats where direct human monitoring is difficult. This makes it easier to detect the presence of rare and shy animals.

By studying the collected footage, staff will be able to gain further information about wildlife numbers, distribution areas, activity times, habitat use and relationships among different species. In the long term, such data is expected to support conservation policy-making, risk identification and scientific management.

The Huanglong Nature Reserve has said it will continue to improve and expand its infrared monitoring system. It also plans to strengthen regular ecological conservation work and make further efforts to protect biodiversity.

According to reserve officials, wildlife protection is not the responsibility of one area alone but a long-term task linked to overall ecological security. Continuous monitoring and scientific conservation are therefore necessary to maintain the natural balance among forests, wildlife, water resources and the local environment.

The footage captured in Huanglong sends a positive message that ecological security in western Sichuan is being strengthened. The dense presence of rare wildlife in the same area is considered an encouraging achievement for China’s conservation efforts.

The development also shows that concrete results can be achieved in natural heritage protection through the combination of modern technology, scientific management and long-term conservation policies. The images captured by the infrared camera are not only attractive wildlife visuals but also evidence of healthy forests, secure habitats and rich biodiversity.

The Huanglong Nature Reserve has expressed its commitment to continuing habitat protection, improving monitoring systems, conserving biodiversity and contributing to ecological security in western Sichuan in the days ahead.
