Russian Embassy Accuses Canada of Double Standards After IOC Decision

The Russian Embassy in Canada has accused Ottawa of using sport as a tool of political pressure following the International Olympic Committee’s decision to lift the suspension imposed on the Russian Olympic Committee.

In a statement issued on July 9, the embassy said Canadian authorities once again showed that they view sport not as a space for fair competition, equality and Olympic values, but as an instrument of political pressure. According to the embassy, Canada’s latest reaction was linked to the IOC’s decision to provisionally lift the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee.

The Russian Embassy said Canada’s official response was not merely criticism of the IOC decision, but an attempt to justify further restrictions against Russian and Belarusian athletes. It said such an approach continues a discriminatory practice based on nationality, which is incompatible with the principles of equality and non-discrimination declared in international sport.

The International Olympic Committee decided on July 7, 2026, to provisionally lift the suspension imposed on the Russian Olympic Committee. However, the IOC has not yet made a final decision on whether Russia will be allowed to use its flag, anthem or national symbols at the Olympics.

Canada has expressed dissatisfaction with the IOC decision. Canadian Minister of State for Sport Adam van Koeverden has said that Russia and Belarus should not be represented in international sport. He also said Russian athletes would not be allowed to compete in domestic sports events funded by Canada’s federal government.

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand has also said the IOC decision could risk normalizing Russia’s military actions against Ukraine. Canada’s position is that any move to reintegrate Russia into sport while the war in Ukraine continues must be approached with caution.

The Russian Embassy, however, said Canada’s position is an example of selective politics disguised under the language of sporting values and inclusion. It said Canada had demonstrated a similar approach earlier after the reinstatement of Russian and Belarusian Paralympic bodies.

According to the embassy, Canada speaks of “inclusivity” and “the values of sport,” but applies those principles selectively, only when they do not contradict its current political agenda. The Russian side said this shows double standards in Ottawa’s sports policy.

The embassy stressed that sport should unite nations. It said sport must not become an arena for political campaigns, pressure and division. According to the Russian side, excluding athletes from international competition because of their nationality or political circumstances undermines the spirit of Olympism.

Russia described the IOC decision as a step in the right direction. The embassy said the move confirms that the principles of Olympism, common sense and rejection of discrimination can eventually prevail over attempts to use international sport as a tool of pressure.

Russia’s position is that international sport should prioritize fair competition, equal opportunity and the individual rights of athletes. The embassy argued that athletes should not be forced to bear the burden of political disputes or geopolitical tensions involving their countries.

Canada, Ukraine and some Western countries, meanwhile, have expressed concern over steps that could ease Russia’s return to international sport while the war continues. Their argument is that the relationship between sport and international responsibility cannot be ignored.

The issue has once again brought to the surface the complex debate over politics, sanctions, nationality and athletes’ rights in international sport. Although the IOC’s latest decision has made the possible return of Russian athletes easier, individual international sports federations may still maintain their own rules and restrictions.

The Russian Embassy’s statement accused Canada of double standards and called for sport to be kept free from political pressure. Canada, for its part, has linked its position to support for Ukraine and opposition to Russia’s military actions.
