Russia and Burundi Agree to Deepen Political Dialogue and Multilateral Cooperation

Russia and Burundi have reaffirmed their commitment to deepen bilateral political and diplomatic dialogue while expanding cooperation in trade, the economy, humanitarian affairs and international issues.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who visited Burundi on a working trip on July 10, was received by President Evariste Ndayishimiye. Lavrov also held official talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and Development Cooperation Edouard Bizimana.

According to the Russian side, the talks covered the full range of issues related to further strengthening the friendly relations between Russia and Burundi. Both sides noted the considerable potential for expanding cooperation in trade, economic, humanitarian and other fields.

Russia and Burundi expressed a strong commitment to deepen political and diplomatic dialogue and intensify coordination in international affairs, including efforts to address global and regional crises.

The two countries also noted the similarity of their approaches to building a more just and polycentric world order. They stressed the importance of maintaining close coordination at the United Nations and other multilateral platforms on issues of shared interest.

In view of Burundi’s current presidency of the African Union, the two sides also reviewed the results and prospects of Russia’s partnership with the continental organisation.

They exchanged views on peace and security in Africa, with particular attention to challenges in the Great Lakes region and possible approaches to resolving them.

Special attention was given to preparations for the third Russia–Africa Summit, scheduled to be held in Moscow in October 2026. The two sides agreed to cooperate closely to ensure the successful organisation of the summit.

Russia has continued to prioritise the expansion of political dialogue, economic partnership and multilateral cooperation with African countries. Burundi’s leadership role within the African Union has made coordination between Moscow and Bujumbura particularly important in the run-up to the summit.

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, Lavrov’s visit was held in a warm and trusting atmosphere.

The visit further strengthened the traditionally friendly relations between Russia and Burundi and created additional momentum for expanding bilateral political, economic and international cooperation.
