Russia Summons German Ambassador Over Alleged Involvement in Ukrainian Strikes

The Russian Foreign Ministry summoned Germany’s ambassador in Moscow on July 13 and lodged a formal protest over what it described as Berlin’s involvement in Ukrainian attacks on civilian infrastructure inside Russia.

According to the ministry, the German envoy was told that Berlin’s expanding military and technical support for Kyiv was unacceptable.

The Russian side raised concerns over military and military-technical agreements between Germany and Ukraine, direct arms deliveries and the creation of joint ventures intended to develop offensive capabilities that could be used against civilian facilities in Russia.

Moscow specifically referred to cooperation involving reconnaissance and strike drones, air-defence missiles and rocket munitions. It alleged that such weapons were being used in attacks on Russian civilian infrastructure.

The Russian Foreign Ministry also accused Germany of attempting to influence third countries over the nature and format of their relations with Russia.

The ambassador was told that Berlin’s efforts to dictate to official representatives of the People’s Republic of China how they should engage with Moscow were unacceptable.

During the meeting, the Russian side also strongly criticised Germany’s information and propaganda activities.

Moscow claimed that parts of the German media and communications apparatus were increasingly adopting methods reminiscent of the worst practices of Nazi propaganda.

The ministry described such conduct as immoral and said it provoked rejection and outrage among broad sections of Russian society because of the country’s historical experience during the Second World War.

The statement concluded with a sarcastic reference to the German ambassador’s expected departure after completing his posting.

The ministry said it had learned “with no small degree of satisfaction” that the ambassador would return to Germany in a petrol-powered vehicle.

The remark appeared to be a diplomatic jibe aimed at Germany’s promotion of green-energy policies and electric transportation.
