Yamal’s Fitness Draws Attention Ahead of World Cup Final as Spain Expect Him to Be Available

Concerns have grown over the fitness of Spain’s teenage star Lamine Yamal after he did not take part in full team training on Thursday ahead of Sunday’s FIFA World Cup final against Argentina.

The 19-year-old trained separately during Spain’s first session in New Jersey instead of joining the regular group exercises. His left thigh was visibly bandaged. Defender Pedro Porro also completed an individual programme away from the main squad.

The Spanish Football Federation said both players were training separately as a precaution and were expected to be available for the final. According to the federation, the decision was part of workload management and recovery planning rather than a response to any newly confirmed injury.

Yamal appeared to be walking with some discomfort after Spain’s semifinal victory over France on Tuesday, prompting speculation about his condition. Spain coach Luis de la Fuente said after the match that there were no signs of a significant injury and that the forward was experiencing only the normal physical effects of a demanding game.

The Spanish coaching staff believes the discomfort may have resulted from repeated physical challenges involving French defenders Lucas Digne and Theo Hernandez. Keeping Yamal fully rested and fresh for the final has therefore become a priority for the team management.

Yamal entered the World Cup after recovering from a hamstring injury, and Spain have carefully managed his training load and playing time throughout the tournament. His earlier injury history has made the latest signs of discomfort a matter of particular concern.

Yamal played an important role in Spain’s 2–0 semifinal victory over France by winning the penalty that led to the opening goal. Mikel Oyarzabal converted the spot kick before Pedro Porro scored Spain’s second goal.

Yamal has made seven appearances and scored once at this World Cup. Although his goal tally has been modest, his close control, dribbling, ability to pressure defensive lines and chance creation have made him a crucial part of Spain’s attacking system.

The victory over France extended Spain’s unbeaten run in regulation time to 37 consecutive matches. Since March 2024, Spain have recorded 28 wins and nine draws without losing within 90 minutes, setting a new national-team record.

Spain will face defending champions Argentina in Sunday’s final at New York New Jersey Stadium. Spain are seeking their second World Cup title and their first since 2010, while Argentina are attempting to retain the trophy.

No detailed medical report on Yamal’s condition has been released. However, the latest assessment from the Spanish federation and coaching staff indicates that the problem is not considered serious and that he is expected to be available for selection against Argentina.
