Guinea held the inaugural session of its new National Assembly on Friday at the People’s Palace in the capital, Conakry, formally beginning the term of the country’s 10th legislature.
It is the first legislature of the Fifth Republic established under the new constitution adopted in 2025.
During the session, Dansa Kourouma, former president of the National Transitional Council, was elected speaker of the 147-member National Assembly.
Kourouma received 129 votes, while 18 ballots were declared invalid.
Guinea held parliamentary and local elections on May 31. A coalition of parties supporting President Mamadi Doumbouya secured a majority in the National Assembly.
The new constitution introduced a bicameral parliamentary system. The National Assembly serves as the lower chamber, with its members directly elected for five-year terms, while the Senate functions as the upper chamber.
The inauguration of the National Assembly is being viewed as another important step in Guinea’s transition from military rule toward a constitutional and institutional political system following the 2021 change of power.
