Chelsea Sign Morgan Rogers for Record Fee for a British Player

English Premier League club Chelsea have signed England attacking midfielder and forward Morgan Rogers for a record fee involving a British player.

Chelsea brought the 23-year-old to London from Aston Villa for £117 million, approximately $157 million. Rogers has signed a contract with the club until 2033.

The transfer makes Rogers the most expensive British player in football history. He surpassed the record set earlier this month when Manchester City signed Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116 million.

Rogers has emerged as one of the Premier League’s leading young attacking players. Capable of playing as a winger or an attacking midfielder, he joined Aston Villa from Middlesbrough in 2024 and scored 31 goals in 125 appearances for the club.

The signing is Chelsea’s third major summer acquisition under new head coach Xabi Alonso.

The club had previously brought in Italian defender Marco Palestra from Atalanta and Portuguese winger Geovany Quenda from Sporting Lisbon.

Palestra was the first player signed during Alonso’s tenure. Quenda’s transfer had been agreed earlier, but he formally joined Chelsea’s squad this summer.

The overall record for the most expensive transfer in English football remains with Alexander Isak. Liverpool paid Newcastle United £125 million, approximately $170 million, to sign him in 2025.

Rogers is expected to strengthen Chelsea’s attacking options and could operate alongside Cole Palmer either on the wing or in an attacking midfield role.
