Russia Expands Support for National Films, Family Cinema and Regional Storytelling

Russia is expanding structural support for domestic cinema through programmes covering national film production, children’s and family content, animation, regional storytelling and access to film exhibition in smaller communities.

According to the Russian Cinema Fund, 23 national film projects submitted by leading domestic production companies were approved for production support during the 2026 selection process.

A separate evaluation mechanism has also been conducted for national film projects submitted by other production organisations. Dozens of projects were presented directly before evaluators at the Russian Ministry of Culture in July.

Children’s and family films, together with animation, form another significant component of the support framework. On July 17, producers presented new national animated films as well as distinctive auteur projects by leading Russian animation directors.

The Cinema Fund has also established specific attention for stories about Russia’s Far East and productions created in the region. Projects in this category, together with films intended for children and family audiences, underwent evaluation on July 21.

Efforts are simultaneously being made to broaden access to theatrical and audiovisual content in smaller communities. A programme supports the creation or modernization of audiovisual centres in settlements with populations below 50,000.

Mosfilm has meanwhile reported organising hundreds of free screenings of films from its classic collection across dozens of Russian regions since the beginning of 2026.

The combination of production financing, animation support, regional storytelling, exhibition infrastructure and access to film heritage illustrates a strategy that seeks to strengthen both contemporary Russian filmmaking and its established cinematic tradition.
