Nepali Cinema Expands from Box-Office Transparency to Global Market Outreach

Nepal’s film sector is gradually expanding beyond conventional production and theatrical exhibition, with increasing attention being given to box-office transparency, international promotion, animation and VFX, and broader institutional development.

The Film Development Board has continued releasing weekly domestic box-office data through its official Cinepa box-office system. The latest reports include theatrical performance figures recorded up to 11:59 p.m. on Shrawan 10. Regular disclosure of official ticketing information is helping strengthen a culture in which commercial performance can be assessed through verified data rather than promotional claims.

International outreach has also become more visible. Earlier this year, the Film Development Board established Nepal’s first official presence at the 79th Cannes Film Festival in France through cooperation with the Nepal Tourism Board and Shahi Production. The initiative was designed to promote Nepali films, filmmakers, potential shooting locations and international collaboration opportunities.

Nepal’s emerging animation sector is another area receiving institutional attention. The Association of Visual Animation and VFX Artists of Nepal, in cooperation with the Film Development Board, is preparing to organize the country’s first AVAAN Animation Film Festival, AAFF 2026, in October under the theme “My Nepal, Reimagined.”

The Board is also working through mechanisms related to box-office management, international promotion, the Story Bank, women filmmakers’ empowerment and film exhibition monitoring.

Together, these developments indicate that Nepali cinema is gradually evolving from a primarily production-oriented sector into a broader creative industry linked with data, technology, professional skills, international markets and cultural outreach.
