The 2026 summer movie season is showing strength across different segments of the U.S. theatrical market, with major studio releases driving box-office activity while independent and art-house cinemas are also reporting encouraging audience trends.

According to the latest summer figures compiled by Box Office Mojo, “Toy Story 5” has emerged as the season’s leading title in the domestic market, followed among the major performers by films including “The Odyssey,” “Obsession,” “Michael,” “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” “Backrooms” and “The Mandalorian and Grogu.”

The range of successful titles — spanning animation, epic drama, horror, biography and established franchises — indicates that audiences are responding to a relatively diverse theatrical slate.

Positive signs are also visible outside the major multiplex market. Cinema United, citing the Art House Convergence 2026 National Audience Survey, reported that participating independent cinemas recorded grosses 8.8 percent higher than a year earlier and 38 percent above 2019 levels.

The survey covered more than 27,000 moviegoers at over 50 independent cinemas across the United States. It also pointed to a younger generation entering the art-house audience, with people who began attending their preferred independent cinema within the past three years averaging 11 years younger than the overall survey population.

The simultaneous performance of large-scale studio productions and community-oriented independent theatres suggests that the theatrical experience continues to retain significant appeal across different segments of the American film market.
