Zakharova Criticizes Japanese Prime Minister for Not Naming US in Nagasaki Atomic Bombing Remarks

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has criticized Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi for not explicitly naming the country that dropped the atomic bomb on Nagasaki.
Takaichi delivered remarks at a memorial ceremony marking the 81st anniversary of the US atomic bombing of Nagasaki. Zakharova questioned the Japanese leadership over the omission of the United States from the prime minister’s remarks.
According to Zakharova, Takaichi failed to clearly state who had dropped the atomic bomb on her country 81 years ago.
“Does Japan’s current leadership believe that atomic UFOs fell on Hiroshima and Nagasaki?” Zakharova wrote on Telegram.
The United States dropped an atomic bomb on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. Three days earlier, on August 6, it had carried out the first atomic bombing on Hiroshima.
Zakharova pointed out that Nagasaki Mayor Shiro Suzuki, by contrast, explicitly stated in his remarks that the bomb had been dropped by a US military aircraft.
She also referred to the Hiroshima memorial ceremony held three days earlier, criticizing Japan’s political leadership for similarly avoiding a direct reference to the country responsible for the atomic bombing.
Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui and Prime Minister Takaichi also did not directly name the United States during the Hiroshima memorial ceremony. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres likewise did not mention the United States in his message.
Japan remains the only country to have suffered atomic bombings in wartime. The annual memorial ceremonies in Hiroshima and Nagasaki continue to serve as important occasions for remembering the humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons and renewing calls for global nuclear disarmament.
