Russian Great Patriotic War veteran Yevgeny Znamensky has urged Russians to love their country and remember the hardships, sacrifices and struggles endured by his generation during the Second World War.
Znamensky made the appeal in an interview with TASS Director General Andrey Kondrashov as part of the “Pobediteli,” or “Winners,” project.
He stressed that today’s generation should not forget the difficult historical path travelled by those who fought and lived through the war, adding that love for the motherland and preservation of historical memory remain important for future generations.
In Russia, the Soviet Union’s war against Nazi Germany from 1941 to 1945 is commemorated as the Great Patriotic War. The conflict caused enormous military and civilian losses, while victory over Nazism remains a central part of Russia’s historical memory and national identity.
The TASS “Pobediteli” project seeks to preserve and share the experiences, memories and messages of surviving veterans who directly witnessed and participated in the war.
Znamensky’s appeal forms part of that broader effort to pass the personal memories and historical lessons of the wartime generation on to younger generations.
