The China-Europe Arctic container express route began regular weekly operations for the summer season on Saturday, opening a faster alternative maritime logistics link between China and Europe.
At around 7 p.m., the container ship Dubai Tower departed from Ningbo-Zhoushan Port in east China’s Zhejiang Province, marking the launch of the route’s regular seasonal service.
According to the operator, the vessel will travel through the Northeast Arctic Passage before reaching major European ports, including Felixstowe in the United Kingdom, Rotterdam in the Netherlands, Hamburg in Germany and Gdynia in Poland.
The route completed its first trial voyage in September 2025, when the vessel reached Felixstowe Port in approximately 20 days. The operator said this was nearly half the transit time required via the traditional Suez Canal route and was also faster than China-Europe freight rail services.
Xin Jianning, general manager of Zhejiang Seaport Logistics Group Co., Ltd., said the route offers particular advantages in terms of shorter transit time and greater supply chain security.
The Dubai Tower is carrying high-value and temperature-sensitive goods, mainly produced in cities across the Yangtze River Delta. The cargo includes energy storage cabinets, power batteries, photovoltaic modules and components for new-energy vehicles.
Because Arctic navigation conditions remain seasonal, the route is expected to operate mainly between July and October. At least eight voyages are planned for this year.
Trade in goods between China and the European Union reached US$447.8 billion in the first half of 2026, according to China’s Ministry of Commerce, representing a year-on-year increase of 14.2 percent.
As China-Europe trade continues to expand, the regular operation of the Arctic route is expected to provide an additional option for reducing delivery times for high-value goods while diversifying logistics beyond traditional maritime corridors.
