Kishor Shrestha’s Habeas Corpus Petition Assigned to Supreme Court Division Bench

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear today a habeas corpus petition filed on behalf of Janastha Weekly editor Kishor Shrestha.

The petition has been assigned to a division bench comprising Justices Nahakul Subedi and Balkrishna Dhakal.

Shrestha is currently in police custody in connection with an investigation into an alleged violation of personal privacy.

During a preliminary hearing on Shrawan 29, a single bench of Justice Dhakal ordered the authorities to produce Shrestha before the Supreme Court on Bhadra 1 along with the materials seized during the investigation.

Police arrested Shrestha from his residence in Lalitpur on Wednesday night in connection with the alleged privacy-related offence.

Following his arrest, his wife Saraswati Shrestha filed a habeas corpus petition at the Supreme Court on Thursday, questioning the legality of his detention.

Shrestha’s arrest, as well as police action at his residence and the Janastha office, has drawn concern from journalists and media-related organizations.

The division bench is now expected to examine the legal basis of his detention, the arrest procedure and the issues raised in the petition.
