Russian SVR Claims Plan to Fabricate Evidence of Arms Trafficking in Latin America

Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) has claimed that a Western intelligence agency, in coordination with Ukrainian actors, is preparing a new information operation aimed at discrediting Russia in Latin America.
According to a statement issued by the SVR Press Bureau, the alleged plan is intended to portray Russia as illegally supplying weapons to drug cartels and other organised criminal groups in Venezuela, Colombia and Mexico.
The SVR claimed that Russian-made weapons captured during the conflict in Ukraine are being transported to Latin American countries and could later be presented as evidence linking Moscow to illicit arms supplies.
It further alleged that fabricated audio and video materials are being prepared to create the impression that Russian representatives supplied weapons to Latin American recipients through intermediaries.
According to the Russian intelligence agency, forged documents may also be used to link members of the Russian Armed Forces to the alleged arms supply scheme in an effort to make the purported evidence appear more credible.
The SVR said the objective of the alleged operation is to damage Russia’s relations with Latin American countries and pressure governments in the region to support Western policies against Moscow.
However, the SVR did not publicly provide evidence substantiating its allegations, identify the Western intelligence service it accused of organising the operation, or disclose detailed information about the weapons it said had already been transferred to Latin America. The claims therefore remain independently unverified.
In its statement, the SVR also reiterated Russia’s longstanding position that an extensive information campaign has been conducted against Moscow since the beginning of the Ukraine conflict.
The agency referred to the events in Bucha in 2022 as an example of what it described as an information operation against Russia. Russia’s account of the Bucha events remains sharply at odds with the conclusions presented by Western governments and international investigations.
The SVR also invoked the 1939 Gleiwitz incident as a historical example, arguing that staged provocations and disinformation operations can contribute to wider security crises.
No immediate public response from Western governments or Ukrainian authorities to the latest SVR allegations was available in the material cited.
The statement highlights how the confrontation surrounding the Ukraine conflict extends beyond the battlefield into intelligence activity, information warfare and efforts to shape international opinion. Until independent evidence emerges, however, the latest allegations should be treated as the official claims of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service rather than established facts.
