The CPN-UML has urged Rastriya Swatantra Party Chair Rabi Lamichhane to immediately initiate a restructuring of the government, including a change in the prime minister.

Speaking in the House of Representatives, UML parliamentary party leader Ram Bahadur Thapa “Badal” said Lamichhane, as the principal political leader of the RSP, should take the initiative to reorganise the government.

“The RSP chair, in his capacity as the party’s principal political leader, should immediately take steps to restructure the government, including the prime minister,” Thapa said.

He also warned that failure to address the government’s shortcomings and move toward restructuring could create conditions for a political movement.

Accusing the current government of failing to adequately address issues related to national sovereignty, democracy and people’s livelihoods, Thapa claimed that a large-scale public movement could emerge.

“There is one final option left. Otherwise, to restore the questions of nationalism, democracy and people’s livelihood, an unimaginable public tsunami, larger than those of 1950, 1990 and 2006, will soon rise from all directions. It will certainly come,” he said.

The UML’s latest statement reflects mounting opposition pressure on the government led by Prime Minister Balendra Shah. Any restructuring of the government or change of prime minister, however, would depend on the decisions of the ruling parties, parliamentary support and the relevant constitutional process.
