All Villagers Near Gyirong Port Evacuated to Safety After Mudslide

All residents of villages near Gyirong Port in the Xizang Autonomous Region have been evacuated to safe areas following Wednesday’s destructive mudslide, according to Xizang’s border inspection authorities.

More than 300 villagers from several settlements near the port were moved to safer locations within Gyirong County with assistance from rescue personnel deployed by the regional border inspection authorities.

According to preliminary Chinese assessments, the mudslide originated on the Nepali side before affecting the Gyirong Port area. However, the precise origin, trigger and sequence of the disaster still require further scientific investigation.

Initial estimates indicate that three people have died and 558 others remain missing on the Chinese side, including 260 foreign nationals. Authorities have stressed that these figures are preliminary and may change as search and rescue operations continue.

Rescue teams, local authorities and border inspection personnel are continuing efforts to locate missing people, support evacuated residents and monitor the affected area for possible secondary hazards.

Authorities are also closely watching the risk of further landslides, sudden water surges and instability associated with a landslide-dammed lake discovered near the port.
