Nearly 100 Chinese Nationals Missing on Nepal Side After Disaster, Beijing Verifying Details

Nearly 100 Chinese nationals remain unaccounted for on the Nepali side following Wednesday’s devastating mudslide and flood, according to China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said at a regular press briefing on Thursday that preliminary information indicated that nearly 100 Chinese citizens were missing in the disaster-affected area on the Nepali side.

Lin said the Chinese Embassy in Nepal is working with Nepali authorities to further verify the number, location and status of those who remain out of contact.

The disaster in the Bhote Koshi and Nepal-China border region has left a large number of people, including foreign nationals, missing. Nepali security agencies are continuing intensive search and rescue operations in affected settlements and along downstream river corridors.

Chinese authorities are also gathering information on their nationals and maintaining close coordination with the Nepali side.

As the figures remain preliminary, the number of missing Chinese citizens could change as rescue operations, identification efforts and communication with affected individuals continue.
