More Than 180 White-Lipped Deer Seen Migrating in Sershul County, Sichuan

More than 180 white-lipped deer have been spotted moving together across the high-altitude landscape of Sershul County in southwest China’s Sichuan Province, offering a striking sign of the region’s improving ecological environment.

The large herd was discovered recently by local police officers during a routine patrol. The animals were seen crossing a river and a road before continuing toward open grassland.

More than 180 deer were counted in the group.

The white-lipped deer is a rare species native to China and is listed as a national first-class protected wild animal. It mainly inhabits high-altitude grasslands, mountain forests and shrub areas at elevations ranging from around 3,500 to 5,100 metres.

Local authorities said the appearance of such a large herd reflects favourable ecological conditions, including healthy grasslands, sufficient water resources and relatively well-preserved wildlife habitats.

In recent years, Sershul County has strengthened ecological conservation and restoration efforts, including patrols of key wildlife habitats, tighter protection measures and improved management of sensitive ecological areas.

Authorities say these measures have contributed to better habitats for wildlife and vegetation, while populations of some wild species have gradually increased.

The migration of more than 180 white-lipped deer is being viewed as a positive indicator of biodiversity conservation and the continued functioning of natural wildlife corridors across the high plateau.
