Russia Accuses Ukraine of Drone Attack on Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant

Russia has accused Ukraine of resuming drone attacks against critical infrastructure at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, warning that such actions could create serious nuclear and radiological risks.

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a statement issued on August 27 that Ukrainian forces were deliberately targeting components and systems directly linked to the safety of Europe’s largest nuclear power plant.

According to the Russian side, a Ukrainian drone targeted the plant’s dry spent nuclear fuel storage facility on August 26. The plant administration said the incident caused no major physical damage or casualties and that radiation levels remained within normal limits.

Russia nevertheless warned that serious damage to the storage facility could have resulted in a major nuclear or radiation accident.

Zakharova described the incident as part of what Moscow considers increasingly dangerous Ukrainian actions around the plant. She also accused Western countries of encouraging such conduct through their continued support for Kyiv.

The Russian Foreign Ministry again called on the leadership of the International Atomic Energy Agency to acknowledge the seriousness of the situation and take effective measures to ensure nuclear safety at the facility.

The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is currently under Russian control, while an IAEA monitoring team remains present at the site. Moscow and Kyiv have repeatedly accused each other of military activity around the plant since the conflict began.

Russia’s allegation that Ukraine was responsible for the August 26 incident has not been independently verified.
