Putin–Tokayev Meeting: Russia–Kazakhstan Relations Developing Dynamically Across Nearly All Areas

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that bilateral relations between Russia and Kazakhstan are developing dynamically across virtually all areas.

Putin made the remarks during a meeting with Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

At the beginning of the August 31 meeting, Putin personally congratulated Tokayev on the results of Kazakhstan’s recent Kurultai parliamentary elections.

He noted the high voter turnout and said the election results demonstrated public support for the course chosen by Tokayev for Kazakhstan’s further development.

According to Putin, voters backed policies aimed at strengthening domestic political stability, advancing the economy, addressing a broad range of social issues and improving people’s living standards.

“That is what people voted for,” Putin said.

The Russian president also emphasized that Russia–Kazakhstan relations are progressing steadily beyond political dialogue, with trade and economic cooperation continuing to expand.

He said bilateral trade indicators remained solid in 2026 and that trade between the two countries had grown further this year.

Russia and Kazakhstan share a long border, deep historical ties and extensive economic links. The two countries cooperate in trade, energy, industry, transport and other sectors, while also maintaining close coordination through multilateral platforms including the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.

The Putin–Tokayev meeting in Bishkek highlighted the continuation of strategic dialogue between Moscow and Astana alongside the SCO Summit.

Putin said the broad-based relationship between the two countries continues to strengthen, with practical cooperation in economic and social development expected to expand further.
