Nepal and Federated States of Micronesia Establish Diplomatic Relations

Nepal and the Federated States of Micronesia have formally established diplomatic relations, bringing the number of countries with which Nepal maintains diplomatic ties to 185.

Nepal’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Lok Bahadur Thapa, and the Permanent Representative of the Federated States of Micronesia to the United Nations, Jeem S. Lippwe, signed a joint communiqué establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries. According to Nepal’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, the signing formally marked the beginning of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

On the occasion, the two permanent representatives exchanged views on expanding bilateral relations and exploring cooperation on issues of common interest at national and international forums. They also discussed prospects for strengthening coordination and mutual support at the United Nations and other multilateral platforms.

The Federated States of Micronesia is an island nation in the western Pacific Ocean comprising more than 600 islands. It attained its present status as an independent sovereign state on November 3, 1986, and became a member of the United Nations on September 17, 1991. The country has a total land area of around 701 square kilometres and an estimated population of about 100,000.

Nepal and Micronesia are both members of the Group of 77 and China. The establishment of diplomatic relations is expected to provide a broader foundation for dialogue and cooperation in areas of common interest, including development, climate change, concerns of small and developing states, South-South cooperation and coordination at the United Nations and other multilateral forums.
