Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi in Beijing on Wednesday. China’s Foreign Ministry had announced a day earlier that Araghchi would visit China on September 16 and hold talks with Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.

The meeting took place amid continued high-level diplomatic consultations between China and Iran. The two countries maintain a comprehensive strategic partnership, and in recent months Wang and Araghchi have held repeated discussions on the security situation in the Middle East, diplomatic processes related to Iran, the Strait of Hormuz and bilateral cooperation.

During an earlier round of talks in Beijing in May, China expressed support for Iran’s sovereignty and security and said regional tensions should be resolved through political and diplomatic means. Iran, in turn, described China as a comprehensive strategic partner and expressed its willingness to expand economic, political and multilateral cooperation.

Detailed official information on Wednesday’s talks was not immediately released. However, given the continuing tensions in the Middle East and the recent diplomatic activity between China and Iran, bilateral relations as well as regional and international issues were understood to be among the main areas of discussion.
