National Academic Conference on Contemporary Tibetan Literature Held in Xining, Winners of 7th Tibetan Short Story Competition Honoured

A national academic conference on the study and research of contemporary Tibetan literature, along with the award ceremony for the 7th National Tibetan Short Story Competition, was held in Xining, Qinghai Province, China. The event, held on September 12, was jointly organised by Qinghai Minzu University and its School of Tibetan Studies, with the Qinghai Tibetan-language newspaper office serving as a co-organiser.

Focusing on the theme “Study of Contemporary Tibetan Literature in the Context of New Humanities,” the conference brought together more than 100 participants, including representatives from relevant institutions in Sichuan, Qinghai, Xizang and Gansu, university professors, researchers in literature and language, doctoral and postgraduate students, and media professionals. Participants held extensive discussions on the development of Tibetan literature in the new academic environment, research methodologies, literary trends and the study of contemporary creative writing.

The award ceremony for outstanding works in the 7th National Tibetan Short Story Competition was also held during the event. “The Bird and Jolmo” by Namkha Tashi of Shigatse, Xizang, won first prize.

Two works received second prize. “White Light Drawn Toward the Sky” by Ngodrub Dorje of Lhasa, Xizang, and “Star” by Lakor of Chamdo were awarded second prize.

Three works received third prize. “Parrot” by Dendrub of Nagqu, Xizang, “Not Human” by writer Choying Gyatso of Garze, Sichuan Province, and “The Hat on the Head Has Horn-Like Corners” by Dzogu Tenzin Trinley were awarded third prize.

According to the organisers, the conference aimed to further expand the study of contemporary Tibetan literature in the new academic and research environment, strengthen scholarly exchanges among researchers and writers from different regions, and encourage a new generation of literary creators. The national short story competition was also described as an important platform for promoting Tibetan-language literary creation, identifying new writers and advancing the development of contemporary literature.
