Traditional Shadow Puppetry Meets Mystery as ‘Jinghun Ming’ Opens in Chinese Cinemas

A new Chinese film combining traditional cultural heritage with modern mystery storytelling, Jinghun Ming, opened in cinemas across China on Friday. Directed by Xu Jie, the film stars Guo Jiaqi, Kan Yihong and Wang Hui in leading roles and began its theatrical run on September 18.

The mystery thriller distinguishes itself by placing traditional Chinese shadow puppetry and folk culture at the heart of its narrative. The story connects characters involved in preserving traditional folk art with conflicts arising from a development project, gradually unfolding through a series of mysterious events. In doing so, the film seeks to combine entertainment with a broader reflection on the relationship between cultural preservation and modern development.

Chinese cinema has increasingly explored ways of integrating the country’s diverse cultural traditions, history and folk arts with contemporary filmmaking techniques and commercial storytelling. Jinghun Ming follows this direction by using shadow puppetry not simply as visual decoration but as an integral element of its cinematic narrative.

Several other domestic productions from different genres are also scheduled to enter Chinese cinemas during the same weekend. With the important National Day theatrical season approaching, the arrival of new releases is expected to add further momentum to China’s domestic film market.
