Intelligent Robots Showcase Diverse Skills at 23rd China–ASEAN Expo

A wide range of intelligent robots attracted visitors at the 23rd China–ASEAN Expo in Nanning, capital of south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Humanoid robots demonstrated capabilities ranging from selling ice cream and preparing tea to performing music, dancing, writing Chinese calligraphy and interacting with children during exhibitions held on September 18 and 19.
One humanoid robot served ice cream, while another demonstrated a traditional Chinese tea ceremony. The tea-making robot prepared and poured tea, illustrating how modern automation can be integrated into traditional hospitality services. The demonstrations highlighted potential applications for intelligent robots in food service, hospitality and other everyday consumer activities.
Musical performances were another attraction. Robots played guitars, drums and pianos, while a robotic band delivered a coordinated performance. Humanoid robots also demonstrated group dancing, showcasing advances in mechanical movement, coordination and the execution of programmed tasks.
Interactive demonstrations generated considerable interest among younger visitors. One robot played Go, known as Weiqi in Chinese, with children, while another demonstrated its ability to pick up and handle fruit. Children were also seen talking with humanoid robots, highlighting the growing potential for direct interaction between people and intelligent machines.
A robot performing Chinese calligraphy provided another example of how automation can be applied to cultural activities. Using a writing instrument, the robot produced Chinese characters on red paper, demonstrating the integration of robotic precision with traditional artistic practices.
The China–ASEAN Expo serves as an important platform for promoting trade, investment, technology and regional cooperation. This year’s robotic demonstrations introduced visitors to a variety of emerging applications developed in China. Although not all the technologies displayed are necessarily ready for widespread commercial deployment, the exhibition offered an opportunity to explore their practical potential and future markets.
The demonstrations in Nanning illustrated how artificial intelligence and automation are expanding beyond industrial production into services, education, entertainment and cultural activities. For businesses and technology developers from China and ASEAN countries, the expo provided opportunities to explore potential applications, exchange expertise and identify new areas for technological cooperation.
