Putin Congratulates South Ossetia’s Newly Elected President Kambolov

Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated Marat Kambolov on his election as President of South Ossetia, expressing confidence that friendship and cooperation between Moscow and Tskhinval will continue to develop under the new leadership.

In a congratulatory message sent on September 19, Putin described Kambolov’s electoral victory as a demonstration of the high level of trust placed in him by the people of South Ossetia. He emphasized that relations between Russia and South Ossetia are characterized by friendship and alliance.

Putin expressed confidence that Kambolov’s leadership would contribute to the further development of bilateral relations for the benefit of both peoples while strengthening regional security and stability.

According to South Ossetia’s Central Election Commission, Kambolov secured 84.95 percent of the vote. A total of 32,869 people participated in the election, representing a reported voter turnout of 82.65 percent.

Russia recognized South Ossetia’s independence in 2008. Since then, Moscow and Tskhinval have maintained close cooperation in security, economic assistance and infrastructure development. Georgia, however, continues to regard South Ossetia as an integral part of its territory and rejects both the region’s elections and Russia’s role there.

Putin’s latest message reaffirms Moscow’s commitment to maintaining its existing political and security relationship with South Ossetia under the newly elected leadership.
