Macron and Trump Discuss Air Defence Interceptors for Ukraine and Reopening of Strait of Hormuz

French President Emmanuel Macron and US President Donald Trump discussed the supply of air defence interceptor missiles to Ukraine during a meeting in New York. The two leaders also agreed to cooperate on restoring maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Reuters, Macron described his talks with Trump as very good and constructive. He confirmed that the discussion included the provision of interceptor missiles needed to strengthen Ukraine’s air defence capabilities.
Ukraine has repeatedly sought additional air defence equipment to protect its cities and critical infrastructure against Russian missile and drone attacks. The discussion between Macron and Trump addressed these security requirements, although no details were provided regarding the number of additional interceptors, a delivery schedule or any new assistance agreement.
The two presidents also agreed to cooperate on efforts to restore shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important waterway connecting the Persian Gulf with international maritime routes.
The strait plays a vital role in global energy transportation, making the restoration of maritime traffic significant for international trade and energy security.
The New York meeting placed Ukraine’s defence requirements and maritime security in West Asia among the principal issues in high-level French–American dialogue. A detailed implementation plan for reopening the Strait of Hormuz has not yet been announced.
