Xi Jinping Begins US State Visit, With Focus on Strategic Stability and China-US Cooperation

Chinese President Xi Jinping is scheduled to pay a state visit to the United States from September 23 to 25 at the invitation of US President Donald Trump. The visit marks another high-level engagement between the two leaders within six months, with discussions expected to focus on bilateral relations, strategic stability, trade and cooperation on global challenges.
According to Xinhua News Agency, Xi and Trump agreed during their meeting in Beijing in May on a shared vision for developing a constructive China-US relationship of strategic stability over the next three years and beyond. Chinese and American scholars have expressed hope that the upcoming meeting will build on that understanding and expand opportunities for practical cooperation.
Veteran US diplomat Chas W. Freeman Jr. said that China and the United States could cooperate for mutual benefit despite their different political ideologies and socioeconomic systems. He noted that both countries need a peaceful international environment to address domestic challenges and emphasized the importance of coexistence and sustained dialogue.
Anthony Moretti, an associate professor at Robert Morris University in Pennsylvania, identified artificial intelligence, climate change, pandemic prevention and educational exchanges as potential areas for expanded cooperation. He said joint efforts by the two countries could help address major global challenges and encouraged greater opportunities for American students to study in China.
Diao Daming, a professor at Renmin University of China, described diplomacy between the two heads of state as an important foundation of China-US relations. Wu Xinbo, dean of the Institute of International Studies at Fudan University, expressed hope that the talks would strengthen strategic mutual trust, improve the management of differences through dialogue and expand practical cooperation.
American business representatives also highlighted the economic importance of stable bilateral relations. Robert Lawrence Kuhn, chairman of The Kuhn Foundation, said political and commercial uncertainty affects private-sector decisions and that a stable relationship would support trade and supply chains. He noted the significance of Chinese products in the US market, ranging from consumer goods to electric vehicles, batteries, solar technologies and emerging industries.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Tuesday that China was ready to work with the United States to further develop a constructive relationship of strategic stability. He emphasized the importance of strengthening dialogue and cooperation while managing differences appropriately, with the aim of contributing to the well-being of both peoples and to global peace, stability and prosperity.
The expectations surrounding Xi’s visit reflect the continuing possibilities for dialogue and cooperation alongside competition between the two countries. The practical outcomes of the visit will become clearer following the leaders’ discussions and the announcement of any agreements or decisions.
