Xi–Trump Summit Focuses on Strategic Stability, Continued Dialogue on Trade and AI

Chinese President Xi Jinping has concluded his state visit to the United States. During the visit, he discussed with US President Donald Trump how to develop bilateral relations on the basis of mutual respect, fairness and reciprocity. The two sides advanced a vision for a constructive relationship of strategic stability.

At their White House meeting on Thursday, Xi and Trump discussed trade, artificial intelligence, Taiwan and international issues. Xi said a recent round of talks between their economic and trade teams had produced a new joint arrangement. Publicly available details did not specify its full scope or an implementation timetable. Trump also called for continued trade talks aimed at reaching a better agreement.

Xi said that, despite competition in artificial intelligence, the two countries needed to cooperate on its risks, potential misuse and continued human control. Trump likewise supported dialogue and cooperation on the issue. On Taiwan, Xi reiterated China’s position and urged the US to handle the matter with caution. The public accounts of the talks did not confirm any specific new agreement on these issues.

During the visit, Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, attended a state dinner and met informally with Trump and his wife, Melania Trump. They also visited the US National Archives. The high-level reception and continued talks signalled a political willingness on both sides to keep the relationship stable. The practical value of that commitment will be measured by the implementation of trade arrangements, the management of technological disagreements and their next steps on Taiwan.
