Second Harvest of Pea Shoots Begins in Sungchu

Farmers in Nyenyul, Sungchu County, Sichuan Province, China, have begun their second harvest of pea shoots. This year, they planted the crop on about 110 mu, or more than seven hectares. The shoots have grown well in the cool highland climate, raising hopes for more local jobs and income.

Pea shoots can be picked several times after a single planting. The harvested shoots are sorted, packaged and shipped to markets elsewhere in China using temperature-controlled transport. They are also sold online, according to local reports.

The crop has provided villagers with seasonal work close to home. Local authorities plan to expand cultivation, increase technical support and improve sales channels.
