Nepal and China Agree to Study Glacial Lakes and Share Disaster Information at Taklakot Border Meeting

Officials from Pulang County in China’s Xizang region and Nepal’s border districts have agreed to study the condition of glacial lakes and regularly exchange information on disasters and border security. At a meeting in Taklakot, Pulang, the two sides also created a shared communication group for prompt contact and coordination during natural disasters.

According to Mukesh Kumar Keshari, chief district officer of Bajhang, the agreement covers the timely exchange of information on risks such as glacial lake outburst floods, floods, landslides and avalanches. The meeting also addressed traditional trade, cultural ties and difficulties faced by residents crossing the border.

The Nepali side asked China to ease a rule requiring border district residents to leave through the same crossing they used to enter. It also proposed entry permits for residents travelling to Lake Mansarovar to collect water for religious ceremonies and the opening of the Urai border crossing in Bajhang. Citing Keshari, Kantipur reported that the Chinese side said it would discuss the proposals.

During the meeting, Namkha Rural Municipality in Humla established a sister relationship with Pulang County. Saipal Rural Municipality and Pulang also discussed pursuing a similar relationship next year, according to Saipal chairperson Manbir Bohara.
